Wall: Wizards' bench was 'our downfall in each series'

John Wall is hoping to see some improvement from the Washington Wizards' second unit.

The All-NBA point guard did not mince words when reflecting on the Wizards' season, believing that the bench was the main reason why Washington failed to move past the second round.

"We need to help our bench," Wall told CSN Mid-Atlantic's Chris Miller. "Just to be honest, that was our downfall in each series that we had in the (Eastern Conference) semifinals, our bench got out played."

While harsh, Wall isn't wrong, as the Wizards' bench posted a net rating of minus-15.5 in 13 postseason games, while shooting just 42.9 percent as a unit.

Despite the disappointing finish, Wall remains optimistic about Washington's future, believing the Wizards need just a few minor tweaks to their roster in order to enter next season as a legitimate contender.

"We have our main core guys. I think adding a couple little pieces here and there will help us get over the hump," Wall said. "Even with all that, we still feel like we had a chance by getting to a Game 7. We had a 50-50 chance of getting to the Eastern Conference finals. We were one game away. We couldn't ask for more."

While Wall hopes to see the Wizards improve their bench this summer, he has no interest in taking an active role in recruiting players, believing free agents will jump at the opportunity to play in Washington.

"I don't think I have to do that," he said. "They understand and see what we do as a team over here: how we play together, how we move the ball. I think guys will just come if they want to come."
