Report: Raptors, Magic can't trade with each other until after 2017-18 season

The Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic made one of the biggest trades of the 2016-17 season, but they won't be dealing with each other again in that resp until the summer of 2018 at the earliest.

As part of the deal that saw the Magic send a compensatory second-round pick to the Raptors after poaching their general manager, Jeff Weltman, to be their president of basketball operations, the two teams are prohibited from trading with each other until after the 2017-18 season, The Vertical's Shams Charania reports.

According to Charania, the provision is not unique to the Weltman hire, but is a league rule that applies to all front-office transactions in which compensation is granted.

The Weltman acquisition marked the fourth employee to be swapped between the two teams in the past 10 months. At this year's trade deadline, the Magic sent Serge Ibaka to the Raptors in exchange for Terrence Ross and a first-round draft pick. They also signed former Raptors center Bismack Biyombo last summer.

Weltman and Raptors president Masai Ujiri have a longstanding professional relationship that extends back to their days with the Denver Nuggets, where Weltman helped Ujiri land his first paying NBA job 15 years ago.
