A Chicago Cubs fan was pronounced dead in hospital Wednesday afternoon, one day after he fell over a railing at Wrigley Field while leaving the stadium.

The fan was identified as 42-year-old Richard E. Garrity of Wheaton, Ill., according to USA Today Sports' Scott Gleeson.

Garrity suffered severe head trauma when he fell over the railing approximately 45 minutes after the Cubs played the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. The exact cause of death has yet to be determined.

"The thoughts and prayers of our entire organization are with his family during this difficult time," the Cubs said in a statement.

In 2015, an Atlanta Braves fan died shortly after falling from the upper deck of Turner Field during a game.
