Watch: Alex Smith very calmly discusses drafting of Mahomes

Kirby Lee / USA TODAY Sports

Alex Smith has been here before and he's not going to panic.

With the Kansas City Chiefs trading up to draft Patrick Mahomes, Smith made his first comments to the media about the addition of his new teammate and showed little sign that he was offended or threatened by the decision.

Smith said he reached out to Mahomes after the Texas Tech product was drafted and admitted the team would be delusional not to place an emphasis on loading up talent at the quarterback position.

The 33-year-old was also open about the fact that this isn't the first time he's seen another quarterback drafted high while he was expecting to be the starter. The San Francisco 49ers picked Colin Kaepernick in second round in 2011 after Smith led the team to a 3-7 record as a starter the season before.

However, Smith says he's "in a different place than last time."
