Farrell: Pedroia's wrist injury a 'cause for concern'

Wrong place, wrong time once again.

Dustin Pedroia continued to be on the receiving end of some poor luck Monday when he was forced to leave a game against the Chicago White Sox after injuring his left wrist.

Just over a month after injuring his knee thanks to a controversial slide from Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado - which sidelined Pedroia for a week - the Boston Red Sox second baseman literally ran into another accidental injury when he tumbled over Jose Abreu during a play at first base.

He was pulled from the game and later diagnosed with a wrist sprain after X-rays came back negative.

The 33-year-old flew back to Boston on Tuesday to undergo an MRI and other testing and even though an assessment has not yet been provided, Red Sox manager John Farrell seems anxious about the health of his second baseman.

"I think any time you're dealing with a position player's wrist, a hitter's wrist, that's always cause for concern," Farrell said, according to ESPN's Scott Lauber.

Pedroia potentially missing more than a few games comes at a bad time, considering the Red Sox have been rolling as of late with six wins in their last eight contests.

The 2008 American League MVP is hitting .292 with 21 RBIs this season, but is slugging just .380 - one of the lowest marks of his career.

In the event Pedroia misses some time, the Red Sox would likely turn to Josh Rutledge - who stepped in as a replacement for the injured second baseman on Monday - to man the position.
