Cloud Computing wins 142nd Preakness Stakes
There will not be a Triple Crown winner in horse racing in 2017. Cloud Computing, who was pegged as a 13-1 underdog Saturday, came back on the home stretch to win the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Track, overcoming favorites Always Dreaming and Classic Empire.
Cloud Computing won the race with a time of 1:55.98, narrowly edging out Classic Empire.
Kentucky Derby champion, and favorite to win, Always Dreaming burst out of the gate alongside Classic Empire. Leading most of the way, Always Dreaming faded near the end finishing in eighth, seemingly paving the way for Classic Empire to take home the trophy. But it wasn't to be.
Cloud Computing was held out of the Kentucky Derby because trainer Chad Brown didn't "want to overwork him," according to the Courier-Journal's Jason Franks.
It seemingly paid off, especially for those who took a shot on him in lieu of the perceived top options. While the dream of a Triple Crown may be lost, the battle for horse racing supremacy will continue at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 10.
