Lake at 17th claimed 69 balls during PLAYERS Championship

Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

The island green at the 17th hole of TPC Sawgrass is as famous as any par-3 in the world, and despite playing a maximum of 150 yards, it presents one of the most difficult tee shots in golf.

In this year's event, the iconic hole played as tough as ever, as a total of 69 balls failed to find the green and died in a watery grave in the surrounding lake.

Twelve players made worse than a double bogey on the hole, including Zac Blair, who dunked three shots on his way to a 9 during Friday's second round.

Some players had a nicer time on the 17th, however. Masters champion Sergio Garcia provided one of the top moments of the tournament by carding a hole-in-one during Thursday's opening round.
