Texas Tech lands versatile Iowa grad transfer Derrick Mitchell

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

Much has been made of the players transferring out of Texas Tech this offseason, but the Red Raiders had a player transfer into the program Saturday, as former Iowa running back Derrick Mitchell Jr. committed to the Red Raiders.

As a graduate transfer, Mitchell will be eligible to suit up for his new school immediately.

As I Graduate today and get my degree from the University of Iowa I will be playing my last year of football at Texas Tech University.

Mitchell fell out of the Hawkeyes' rotation last year after beginning the season with a foot injury, but proved to be a versatile weapon two years ago. The St. Louis native recorded 162 rushing yards and 141 receiving yards in 2015, playing primarily on third downs.

Texas Tech didn't feature much of a running game last year, as Da'Leon Ward led the team with 428 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Kliff Kingsbury's program also lost a number of receivers this offseason, including star pass-catcher Jonathan Giles, so Mitchell could conceivably help out in the passing game as well.
