Oklahoma signs OC Lincoln Riley to 3-year extension

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley will go to bed a lot richer Thursday night than he was when he woke up Thursday morning.

The university's board of regents approved a three-year contract extension for Riley that will run through 2019, the school announced.

The new deal will reportedly pay Riley an annual salary of $1.3 million, according to Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com.

Riley took home the 2015 Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant in his first year in Norman.

"I appreciate OU and Coach (Bob) Stoops taking a chance on me a couple of years ago and the loyalty they've shown to my family," said Riley. "We are extremely grateful, and I want to display my strong loyalty to this school and program in return."

Head coach Stoops also sung Riley's praises Thursday, commending his contributions to the Sooners' program.

"This has been in the works for a few months," said Stoops. "Lincoln's done a phenomenal job in his two years here and we're excited for him and his family. They're great people and have fully immersed themselves into the Oklahoma community. He's fully committed to OU and what we're doing as a university and football program, and all of us are looking forward to continuing to work together to develop young men on and off the field, and bring more championships to Norman."

The chances of Riley honoring the full length of the extension may be slim, as there's a strong chance he'll be courted vigorously by Power 5 teams that find themselves with head coaching vacancies during that time.
