Arsene Wenger is prepared to be the bigger man.

Accused of being a "voyeur" and a "specialist in failure" in the past by his Manchester United counterpart Jose Mourinho, Arsenal manager Wenger is now calling a truce in the war of words that's lasted almost 12 years.

Wenger isn't entirely innocent himself, once dubbing the then-Chelsea manager of becoming "more stupid" since tasting success, and then saying if there was parity for resources in the Premier League, Mourinho wouldn't have done so well.

"We have respect," Wenger told Sky Sports' Mark Crellin of his relationship with Mourinho. "I do not want to make a case of any person, it's important I focus on my own team.

"I'm open always in life for everything, for peace, but what is important when you are a competitor is that you give everything to win the next game."

There could be an end to the rivalry before the pair have reconciled. Following a campaign which saw a Champions League last-16 exit for the seventh straight season and a Premier League top-four spot potentially relinquished for the first time in 22 campaigns, there's continued speculation that Wenger could depart Arsenal when his contract expires in the summer.

He previously said he would announce his decision in March or April, but nothing was forthcoming over that spell.

"That means I was wrong," he joked to BBC Sport before Sunday's bout with Mourinho's United.
