Judge downplays Jeter comparisons: 'There's only one Derek Jeter'

Noah K. Murray / USA TODAY Sports

Aaron Judge doesn't want to be known as a new Mr. November.

The New York Yankees rookie has taken MLB by storm, leading the majors with 13 home runs and a 1.250 OPS in 92 at-bats going into Saturday's contest against the Chicago Cubs. Judge's performance in pinstripes this season has been so dominant, skipper Joe Girardi compared him to the former face of the Yankees, Derek Jeter.

But while the 25-year-old Judge is honored by the talk, he doesn't want to live in the looming shadow of the Bronx Bomber legend.

"It's incredible, Ken," Judge told FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. "It's quite a compliment but there's only one Derek Jeter, Ken. So I'm going to try and go out there and be the best Aaron Judge I can be."

Though Judge might not agree with his skipper's comparison, Girardi is probably one of the most qualified individuals to be able to make the claim as he played alongside the now-retired shortstop for four seasons in New York, before coaching him from 2008-2014.

"I understand that is a big comparison, but I remember Derek when he was young," Girardi said Monday. "He grew into that leadership role but that was Derek. Derek loved to have fun, loved to laugh and loved to play the game."

In short: No pressure, kid.
