The longstanding controversy over the Cleveland Indians' nickname was once again front and center at Tuesday's home opener at Progressive Field, where protesters outraged over the nickname and highly contentious Chief Wahoo logo clashed with fans defending the incendiary iconography.

"One hundred years of racism is enough in Cleveland, Ohio," a protester, captured in a video produced by Cleveland.com, shouted into a megaphone. "One hundred years-plus. Change the name of your baseball team and change the logo."

For more than two decades, demonstrators have assembled at Progressive Field for the club's home opener, imploring ownership to change a nickname widely considered offensive to Native Americans. The responses from Indians fans, as they made their way into the ballpark for Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox, ranged from apathetic to belligerent to vulgar.

On Wednesday, incidentally, an MLB spokesperson confirmed that commissioner Rob Manfred, who has made clear his desire to transition away from the controversial logo, has been "making progress" in discussions with Cleveland's front office in that regard.
