MLB Power Rankings: Dodgers remain untouchable, Brewers fall to No. 10

Kelvin Kuo / USA TODAY Sports

Nobody can stop the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The club locked up one of the best 50-game stretches in baseball's history when its 43-7 record since the beginning of June put Los Angeles in the same conversation as the 1912 New York Giants.

With their untouchable play recently, the Dodgers have solidified their grip on the No. 1 spot, and it'll be tough to see them relinquishing it any time soon.

Here's how the rest of the league stacks up:

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
79-32 9-1 1 (-)

After becoming the first team since 1912 to win 43 times in a 50-game stretch, the only question surrounding these Dodgers is whether they can challenge the 1906 Cubs and 2001 Mariners for the all-time wins record.

2. Houston Astros

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
71-40 4-6 2 (-)

Houston's missing Carlos Correa, Lance McCullers, and George Springer - among others - due to injury, and those absences have been felt during this recent stretch. At least they're getting the injuries out of the way now, before the playoffs.

3. Washington Nationals

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
65-44 5-5 3 (-)

They were breathing sighs of relief in D.C. when it turned out a bad night of sleep forced Max Scherzer from his start in Miami on Aug. 1. It's all about staying healthy for the Nats, and a long-term injury to Scherzer is absolutely the last thing they need.

4. Boston Red Sox

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
63-49 8-2 5 (+1)

Welcome to the show, Rafael Devers. The 20-year-old appears to have halted Boston's revolving door at the hot corner by hitting three homers in his first 10 games, helping to lengthen the team's lead atop the AL East.

5. Arizona Diamondbacks

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
63-48 5-5 6 (+1)

Arizona owns a plus-117 run differential that's second in the NL - and yet is battling just to hold onto home field in the wild-card game. Such is life in the NL West.

6. Colorado Rockies

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
64-48 6-4 10 (+4)

Colorado feasted on the lowly Phillies and Mets this week, but it also took two of three from the Nationals ahead of the trade deadline - as sure a sign as any that this Rockies club will remain very tough to deal with down the stretch.

7. Cleveland Indians

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
59-50 5-5 7 (-)

The Indians are pulling away in the Central, and a big reason why is Danny Salazar. In three starts since returning from the DL on July 22, Salazar owns a 1.35 ERA and has struck out 28 while holding batters to a .121 average.

8. Chicago Cubs

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
58-52 5-5 9 (+1)

Only two catchers in the majors have accumulated at least 3.0 fWAR this season. One of them is Willson Contreras, who's quietly having a monster season for the Cubs and is a big part of why they're still alive in the NL Central.

9. New York Yankees

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
59-51 5-5 11 (+2)

The Baby Bombers have evolved into the Tired Toddlers. The Home Run Derby killed Aaron Judge, while Gary Sanchez is getting called out for bad defense. Their grip on the AL East isn't as tight as it once was.

10. Milwaukee Brewers

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
59-54 5-5 4 (-6)

The Brewers missed out on grabbing one of the big available arms to bolster their rotation at the deadline and the Cubs have passed them by, but not all is lost. They're still just a half-game out of first - meaning the NL Central battle will at least be interesting right to the end.

11. Tampa Bay Rays

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
58-55 5-5 8 (-3)

Steven Souza Jr.'s walk-off home run on Sunday was not only historic - it was the Rays' first walk-off dinger since 2014 - but it helped the Rays stay within a half-game of a playoff spot at a time when they sorely need every win they can get.

12. Kansas City Royals

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
57-53 4-6 15 (+3)

The Royals came out of nowhere to win nine straight from July 19-28 to keep them hot on the trail of the first-place Indians in the AL Central. They've cooled off hard since then, though, losing five of their last seven.

13. Seattle Mariners

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
57-56 6-4 14 (+1)

Seattle made the rare August trade splash Sunday, landing Yonder Alonso from the Athletics. Unfortunately, it came a little too late to really affect their rankings this time around, though the Mariners now have the potential to climb fast by September.

14. St. Louis Cardinals

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
55-56 5-5 17 (-3)

The Cardinals just can't seem to put together that missing run they need. After having a quiet trade deadline, it's been more of the same for St. Louis, alternating wins and losses while the rival Cubs start to run away with the division.

15. Los Angeles Angels

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
55-57 6-4 16 (+1)

Mike Trout is about to record hit No. 1,000, Garrett Richards is nearly healthy for the first time in ages, and they're just a couple games out of the AL wild card. All things considered, not a bad stretch of events for the Halos.

16. Texas Rangers

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
53-58 4-6 12 (-4)

There's not much to be excited about for the rest of Texas' season, except maybe for Adrian Beltre. The wild card is a longshot, especially without Yu Darvish, who's now with the Dodgers. Though tough, cashing in on the impending free agent was the right choice.

17. Baltimore Orioles

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
55-56 7-3 23 (+6)

The Orioles are in a puzzling spot after adding Jeremy Hellickson and Tim Beckham. They're 2 1/2 games back of the second wild card, which sounds good, though four other teams are vying for that same postseason spot and are either tied or higher in the standings.

18. Pittsburgh Pirates

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
54-57 4-6 19 (+1)

The season isn't entirely over for the Pirates, though they're quickly running out of time. Stuck 4 1/2 games behind the Cubs, Pittsburgh needs to leapfrog the Cardinals, Brewers, plus the defending World Series champs to make the postseason, since the wild card is logistically out of reach. It may be time to simply look ahead to 2018, Bucs fans.

19. Minnesota Twins

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
53-56 4-6 13 (-6)

Bartolo Colon! The 44-year-old became the oldest Twins hurler in history to toss a complete game Friday against the Rangers. That's where the feel-good stories pretty much end for Minnesota, though.

20. Toronto Blue Jays

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
52-59 5-5 20 (-)

Roberto Osuna has been one of the bright spots in an otherwise dreary Blue Jays season, though the normally dependable closer has been uncharacteristically off lately, having blown three saves in his last five opportunities. The last thing the Blue Jays need right now is a hurt Osuna.

21. Atlanta Braves

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
51-59 3-7 18 (-3)

Atlanta, understandably, is already looking beyond this season after calling up top prospect Ozzie Albies and touted pitcher Max Fried. At least Freddie Freeman is a permanent first baseman again.

22. Detroit Tigers

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
51-59 6-4 22 (-)

The big question going forward for the Tigers will be whether they trade franchise ace Justin Verlander in an August deal. The 34-year-old has reportedly already passed through revocable waivers but is still due a prohibitive amount of dough.

23. Miami Marlins

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
52-57 6-4 26 (+3)

The Marlins disappointed at the deadline by focusing on the sale of the franchise instead of the sale of their actual talent. Of course, once a new owner is found, the club will - hopefully - find the direction they've been so lacking.

24. New York Mets

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
49-60 2-8 21 (-3)

With the Amed Rosario era underway and the Dominic Smith era around the corner, the focus of the Mets now turns toward which of their outfielders - who have already passed through revocable waivers - gets dealt.

25. Oakland Athletics

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
50-62 6-4 24 (-1)

Over the past two weeks, only Eduardo Nunez has been a better third baseman than Matt Chapman. It's not much consolation for a team that just traded away Sonny Gray but the 24-year-old Chapman could be part of a core the A's can start rebuilding around.

26. Cincinnati Reds

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
45-66 4-6 27 (+1)

Over the last two weeks, Sal Romano has been pretty good. Oh, and Joey Votto is leading all of MLB in walks yet again. That's all. There's nothing else to see here.

27. San Diego Padres

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
49-61 6-4 28 (+1)

The Padres rank dead last in two of the three slash-line statistics. But at least they still have Brad Hand to close games for them.

28. San Francisco Giants

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
44-69 4-6 29 (+1)

It's getting to a point with the Giants that what they do well anymore isn't even clear. Even though the team still has stars, the direction of the club may be trending sharply toward rebuilding.

29. Chicago White Sox

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
41-68 2-8 25 (-4)

Now that the White Sox have finally sold off all of their interesting assets - sorry Derek Holland - the lull portion of the rebuild begins, where the team is likely out of it and just waiting for farmhands to mature and arrive. But at least the Yoan Moncada era has begun.

30. Philadelphia Phillies

RECORD LAST 10 PREVIOUS RANK (CHANGE)
40-69 5-5 30 (-)

Want to play a fun game? Make up a name. Any name. Let's go with Edubray Ramos. Now, ask a friend which one is a reliever for the Phillies: Jesen Therrien or Edubray Ramos. Trick question! It's both.
