White: McGregor has to make decision on 145-pound title or give it up
UFC president Dana White is strongly suggesting Conor McGregor do right by the featherweight division, even if he won't force the champion's hand.
During a recent appearance on NBC Sports Radio, White again implored "The Notorious" to return to 145 pounds now that he's evened his series with rival Nate Diaz at one win apiece. A trilogy bout has been mentioned by both fighters, and McGregor's camp has also expressed interest in a meeting with lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.
White just wants the UFC's cash cow to let them know what's up.
"He's not going to get stripped. He's going to make a decision," White said, according to Damon Martin of FOX Sports. "He knows the Nate Diaz fight isn't the fight to make right now.
"He has to either defend his title or give it up and decide what he wants to do next. We'll get that figured out with him."
McGregor won the UFC featherweight title last December, but has yet to defend it after finding himself in an unexpected welterweight feud with Diaz that has taken up his 2016 competition schedule. His options are also limited by a leg injury that could potentially keep him out of action until 2017.
In McGregor's absence, former champion Jose Aldo defeated Frankie Edgar at UFC 200 to claim an interim belt.
