Sonnen tweets that first drug test in two years was 'basically clean'

If Chael Sonnen is to be believed, he could be inching closer to a comeback after undergoing his first round of USADA drug testing.

The three-time UFC title contender is toying with the idea of ending an ignominious retirement that was necessitated by a failed drug test in June 2014. Sonnen received a two-year suspension that recently ended, so he made the decision to place himself into the USADA testing pool to allow for the possibility of a return to MMA competition.

Former UFC fighters coming out of retirement are required to submit themselves to testing four months in advance of a potential bout. The results of Sonnen's tests were due this week and he responded to an inquiry on Twitter Friday by saying that he's "basically clean."

Given the 39-year-old's history of bending the truth, that answer makes it unclear as to whether we'll see "The American Gangster" in the Octagon again anytime soon. Sonnen himself has joked that the USADA may need to adjust the parameters of their tests for him to have a chance of passing.

Sonnen has not fought since UFC 167 on Nov. 16, 2013, a first-round TKO-loss to Rashad Evans.
