"The Gold Standard" is making his return to World Wrestling Entertainment after a six-year absence.

Shelton Benjamin, a former two-time All-American amateur wrestler at the University of Minnesota, will be joining the "SmackDown Live" roster, the company announced in a vignette Tuesday night.

The 41-year-old was one of a number of Superstars released in April 2010. His first television appearance came in 2003, when he aligned with Charlie Haas and Olympic gold medal winner Kurt Angle to form the "Team Angle" stable.

He would go on to have two WWE Tag Team title reigns with Haas in the self-proclaimed World's Greatest Tag Team, while becoming a three-time Intercontinental Champion as a singles competitor.

Benjamin has competed for several other wrestling promotions since his tenure with WWE came to a close, including Ring of Honor, New Japan Pro Wrestling, and, most recently, Pro Wrestling Noah.
