Augusta's 12th hole: Short but not so sweet to the Masters field
Named "Golden Bell," the 12th hole at Augusta National is the shortest on the course at 155 yards. It's also one of the three holes that make up "Amen Corner," and generally creates some drama Sunday afternoon, when every shot becomes crucial.
But aside from nerves, a number of factors make the hole challenging for competitors. The green is very narrow, only 16 paces deep, and is protected by Rae's Creek. There are also three strategically placed bunkers in the front and in back. Mix in Augusta's swirling winds, which players can't feel on the tee, and you've got one tough shot.
The 12th didn't wait until Sunday to make it difficult for the players this time around. Of the 89 golfers in the Masters field on Thursday, the hole yielded only six birdies. It was the fourth-toughest on the day, averaging 3.28 strokes.
