BYU tight end Steven Richards will miss the upcoming season after sustaining a knee injury during Monday's team practice, head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced Tuesday.

Speaking to assembled media, Mendenhall said Richards will require surgery on his right knee, which was injured during a non-contact drill. He did not specify the nature of the injury.

No date has been penciled in for the procedure but it's expected to be scheduled in the immediate future.

Although it shouldn't impact depth at the position, Mendenhall said it pained him that "one of the nicest" players on the team had his season cut short.
