Fifth-year quarterback JT Daniels is transferring to West Virginia after a two-year stay at Georgia, he told ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Daniels entered the transfer portal in January after the Bulldogs won the national championship with Stetson Bennett at quarterback. Bennett decided to return for 2022, leading Daniels to look for a starting opportunity elsewhere.

Daniels began his college career at USC as a prized recruit from Santa Ana, California. He enjoyed a promising start to his career but tore his ACL in the 2019 season opener. He transferred to the Bulldogs after Kedon Slovis seized the starting job at USC in his absence.

Injuries sidelined Daniels for stretches at Georgia, and Bennett eventually surpassed him on the depth chart. Daniels threw for 1,953 yards with 17 touchdowns and five interceptions for the Bulldogs, making nine appearances over two seasons.

West Virginia is coming off a 6-7 season. Jarret Doege started for the Mountaineers last year, passing for 3,048 yards with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions before transferring to Western Kentucky.

The Mountaineers will open the 2022 schedule Sept. 1 against defending ACC champion Pitt.
