Randy Edsall stepped down as UConn's head coach with immediate effect, the school announced Monday.

The news comes as a surprise and just one day after Edsall announced he'd retire at the end of the 2021 season. The Huskies said in a statement that it was a mutual decision between Edsall and athletic director David Benedict.

"Upon further reflection by both Randy and I, and after having the opportunity to visit with Randy today, we are both in agreement that it is in the best interest of our student-athletes to have a new voice leading UConn football," Benedict said.

Edsall, UConn's all-time leader in wins and games coached, posted an 80-102 record through two stints with the Huskies. The 63-year-old, who's only 6-32 over the last five seasons, previously led the team from 1999-2010 before rejoining in 2017. He also coached Maryland from 2011-15, going 22-34.

Defensive coordinator Lou Spanos will take over as Uconn's interim head coach.

The Huskies are off to a rough start in 2021, as they've been outscored 83-28 through their first two games. UConn dropped its opener 45-0 to Fresno State before losing 38-28 to FCS program Holy Cross.

Uconn will try to snap its skid against Purdue on Sept. 11.
