UConn head coach Randy Edsall will retire at the conclusion of the 2021 season, he announced Sunday.

"After 17 years of service at the University of Connecticut as its head football coach, I've decided to retire at the end of the season," Edsall wrote in a statement.

He added: "Back in 2017 I made a commitment to the University, but felt it was better to make this announcement now rather than the end of the year to allow the university ample time to prepare for the future of the football program.

"All my focus and attention for the rest of the season will be to prepare our players and coaches to go out and win as many games as possible."

Edsall's retirement announcement comes after a disastrous 0-2 start by the Huskies. UConn dropped its opener 45-0 to Fresno State before losing the second contest 38-28 to FCS program Holy Cross.

The 63-year-old is in the midst of his second stint as Huskies head coach, taking over the post in 2017 following an earlier tenure from 1999 to 2010. Edsall also served as Maryland's head coach from 2011 to 2015. He owns a career record of 102-136.
