Florida State head coach Mike Norvell announced Saturday that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

He will not be on the sideline for next's week matchup against Miami. Deputy head coach Chris Thomsen will handle head coaching responsibilities in his absence.

Norvell said in a statement that he's surprised by the result after testing negative twice earlier this week. He also plans to remain involved "remotely as much as possible."

Athletic director David Coburn says Norvell is currently isolated and the university has already reached out to the ACC commissioner and Miami.

"We are proceeding with our COVID protocols as we would with any other case. Coach is isolated, and university tracing staff is handling the contact tracing as they normally do," Coburn said, per The Sun Sentinel's Iliana Limon Romero. "We will continue to test staff and student-athletes as we have been. We have communicated with Commissioner John Swofford and Miami athletics director Blake James."

Coburn stated Florida State's upcoming game against Miami is not currently at risk of being postponed or canceled, according to The Athletic's Chris Vannini.

Norvell is in his first season as Florida State head coach after spending the last four seasons at Memphis. The Seminoles are currently 0-1 after falling 16-13 to Georgia Tech in their season opener.
