Memphis gave interim head coach Ryan Silverfield the top job on a permanent basis following Mike Norvell's decision to leave for Florida State, the school announced Friday.

Silverfield was previously the run game coordinator and offensive line coach with Memphis before being promoted to Norvell's top assistant this season.

His first game in charge will be the Cotton Bowl against Penn State on Dec. 28.

The Tigers captured the AAC championship last week with a victory over Cincinnati. They also secured a 12-win campaign, the highest total in program history.

As an assistant, Silverfield helped Norvell develop one of college football's most consistently explosive offenses. Memphis produced four 1,000-yard rushers over the past three seasons and scored 40.5 points per game in 2019.

Silverfield's college coaching experience includes stints with Arizona State and Toledo, among others. He's also spent time in the NFL with the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings.
