After meeting with Art Briles for the team's vacant offensive coordinator position, Southern Miss announced it will not be hiring the former Baylor head coach.

"We have met with Art Briles regarding a position with the Southern Miss football program," the Golden Eagles said in a statement, via CBS Sports' Barrett Sallee. "Following that meeting, we informed him that he is not a candidate. The University will have no further comment on this matter."

Briles was fired by the Bears in 2016 during a sexual assault scandal that rocked the football program. An investigation found that Baylor football coaches failed to report complaints against players.

The 63-year-old was out of football for two years following his dismissal but was hired by the Guelfi Firenze American football team in Florence, Italy in August.

Southern Miss head coach Jay Hopson was quick to respond to the news.
