Oklahoma agreed Wednesday to reverse its previous decision and grant a waiver to quarterback Austin Kendall, allowing him to transfer to West Virginia and become immediately eligible to play, a source told USA TODAY's George Schroeder.

The university had intended to take advantage of an NCAA rule which would keep Kendall from being immediately eligible to play, sources told ESPN's Jake Trotter, but ultimately opted to grant the quarterback a waiver later in the afternoon.

As a graduate transfer, Kendall should be able to play at another school in 2019. But the Sooners could have exercised a rule forcing a Big 12 player to sit out a year if he transfers within the conference.

Kendall left Oklahoma after the Sooners began pursuing Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is also a graduate transfer.

Kendall already redshirted a season at Oklahoma, so the sophomore would have lost one of his two remaining years of eligibility if he sat out at West Virginia.

A former four-star recruit, Kendall spent his Oklahoma career backing up Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. He threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns in limited action for the Sooners.
