Colorado announced the firing of head coach Mike MacIntyre effective immediately.

The Buffaloes have lost six straight games after beginning the season with five consecutive victories. The team currently sits at the bottom of the Pac-12 South standings.

"I want to thank Mike for six seasons of hard work and dedication to the program, both on and off the field," athletic director Rick George said in a statement. "There's no doubt that the 2016 season was magical, and it appeared we were headed back to taking our place among the nation's elite. However, analyzing the direction of the program over the last two years, I felt this is the necessary time to make a change."

George will name an interim head coach for the team's final regular season game versus California.

Reports surfaced last week that Colorado would part ways with its coach at the end of the season, but Rick George denied the report.

The 53-year-old has $10.3 million remaining on his contract, which runs through 2021. If he obtains new employment as a head coach in either the NFL or NCAA, the school's contract obligations will be reduced by his new salary amount.

MacIntyre guided his squad to a 10-4 record and the Pac-12 South title in 2016 - winning AP Coach of the Year in the process - but he's otherwise failed to post a winning season.

The Buffaloes have gone 10-13 since their successful 2016 campaign and are on the verge of missing a bowl game for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
