Following head coach DJ Durkin's brief reinstatement, a fight broke out amongst the team's players during Maryland's practice Tuesday over the program, sources close to the team told Luke Broadwater of the Baltimore Sun.

Terrapins backup punter Matthew Barber, who's spoken out against the program's culture, said he was assaulted at the end of practice by a teammate who supported Durkin.

Barber said players grabbed his arms behind his back while another player punched him repeatedly in the face, leaving him with a black eye, dislocated shoulder, and in need of multiple stitches.

"My jersey was bloody," Barber told the Baltimore Sun. "I had blood all over my hands."

The player accused of punching Barber in the face has yet to respond to multiple requests for comment on the incident.

Barber said his teammates believed he'd talked to investigators regarding issues on the team and that when Durkin returned to practice Tuesday, his supporters taunted him by insulting him and throwing footballs at him.

"We take any matters involving physical altercations extremely seriously. We are talking with the players involved and will take appropriate actions based on the facts," Maryland athletic director Damon Evans said in a statement.

Maryland's Board of Regents reinstated Durkin on Tuesday, but the university parted ways with the head coach Wednesday after governor Larry Hogan voiced his concerns regarding the lack of transparency from the school's investigation.
