Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence appears to have avoided a major head injury and could return to practice as soon as Monday.

Tigers co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott said the team believes Lawrence is dealing with a neck strain as opposed to a concussion, according to ESPN's David M. Hale.

"The medical staff sees a lot of positive signs and everything is tracking the right way," Scott said. "There's a chance he'll be able to practice (Monday). They're going to let him lift and go through their protocol they have. But they've been very optimistic, and they're kind of finding out it's more of a neck strain, with the way he got hit, so that's good news. But no final decision has been made on that."

The freshman was placed in the concussion protocol after taking a shot to the head in the second quarter versus Syracuse. Head coach Dabo Swinney told reporters after the game that Lawrence was alert and active on the sideline.

The No. 2 overall recruit in the 2018 class was named the Tigers' starting quarterback last week. He replaced Kelly Bryant, who transferred out of the program.

Clemson, ranked No. 4 in the nation, will take on Wake Forest on Saturday.
