Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer once again opened up about his handling of former assistant coach Zach Smith's reputed domestic violence incident and said he regrets not taking swift action when the controversy first came to light.

"I erred when I made a decision to do the best I can to help stabilize that situation," Meyer told ESPN's Tom Rinaldi. "And one of the things I look back now - I probably should've fired him."

Meyer also admitted he made a "bad decision" when he hired Smith without informing athletic director Gene Smith of his legal history.

"I just can't tell you exactly what my mindset was at the time," he said.

Meyer has denied knowing about the text messages exchanged between Zach's ex-wife Courtney Smith and his wife Shelley. He declined to speak on his wife's behalf but defended her decision not to inform him regardless.

"(Shelley) has reasoning for why she didn't react," Meyer said. "And I'm not here to speak for Shelley, but she had a reasoning and her reasoning was what it was. That's why she did not alert me or just go anywhere else with it."

Meyer served out the final contest of his three-game suspension Saturday, as Ohio State defeated TCU. He's eligible to return to the sideline for game action next week against Tulane.
