Top 10 moments from college football's 3rd week
The college football season is in full swing and Week 3 had plenty of action to digest. Let's look back on the top 10 moments from a memorable day on the gridiron:
Title contenders upset
It took a few weeks, but we finally got our first major upsets of the season. First, BYU took down No. 6 Wisconsin, becoming the first non-conference opponent to defeat the Badgers at Camp Randall since 2003. Later, 12th-ranked LSU erased an 11-point deficit and stunned No. 7 Auburn on a game-winning field goal as time expired. LSU kicker Cole Tracy, a transfer from Division II Assumption College, was carried off the field by his teammates.
North Texas gets tricky
North Texas isn't just the Mean Green - it's also really smart. Keegan Brewer faked out the entire Arkansas punt coverage unit, acting like he had called for a fair catch and standing around for a moment or two before racing 90 yards for a touchdown.
Bama makes a statement
Alabama massacred Ole Miss so badly that ESPN took the game off its primary channel in the fourth quarter. Final score: Alabama 62, Ole Miss 7. Statement game.
Taggart, Frost struggle again
Endless fanfare accompanied Willie Taggart and Scott Frost to Florida State and Nebraska, respectively, in the offseason, yet the two first-year coaches are struggling mightily thus far. Taggart's Seminoles went down 30-7 at Syracuse, while Frost's Cornhuskers suffered a 24-19 defeat at the hands of Troy.
Kansas wins ... again
Don't look now, but here come the Jayhawks! Kansas put up 55 points on Rutgers and won their second consecutive game for the first time since 2011. Freshman running back Anthony "Pooka" Williams appears to be a budding star for the Jayhawks, who are 2-0 when he plays.
Bonkers 3rd quarter in Arlington
It was raining touchdowns in the third quarter of TCU-Ohio State at AT&T Stadium, as the Horned Frogs and Buckeyes combined to reach the end zone a whopping five times.
TD | Play |
---|---|
TCU | 16-yard run (Darius Anderson) |
Ohio State | 63-yard pass (Dwayne Haskins to Paris Campbell) |
Ohio State | 28-yard INT return (Dre'Mont Jones) |
Ohio State | 24-yard pass (Dwayne Haskins to K.J. Hill) |
TCU | 51-yard pass (Shawn Robinson to TreVontae Hights) |
Akron beats Big Ten school for first time since 1894
That's no typo, folks. The Zips knocked off Northwestern to pick up their first win over a Big Ten school in 124 years, back when Akron was known as Buchtel College. The Zips received $1.2 million from Northwestern to play - and embarrass - the Wildcats on their own field.
Texas' special teams are back
It remains to be seen whether Texas is back to normal, but the Longhorns' special teams unit was definitely back against USC. Freshman defensive back Caden Sterns helped Texas notch its 900th all-time win by flying in for a heroic field-goal block that the Longhorns returned for a touchdown.
Bowman breaks Big 12 record
He was just a three-star recruit, but Alan Bowman is now a Big 12 record holder. The Grapevine, Texas native set a new conference freshman record with 605 yards passing versus Houston, snatching the mark from former Red Raiders star Patrick Mahomes. Texas Tech battled past the Cougars in a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair.
South Dakota State scores 90 points
The mighty Jackrabbits of South Dakota State blew the doors off Arkansas-Pine Bluff, scoring a school record 90 points in an 84-point win in FCS action. The Jackrabbits registered 926 yards of total offense, and quarterback Taryn Christion threw for 332 yards and five touchdowns despite only attempting 14 passes.
