Urban Meyer investigation could go past initial timetable

Ohio State's investigation into how head coach Urban Meyer handled domestic violence complaints against an assistant in 2015 could extend beyond the school's initial two-week timetable, university president Michael Drake said Thursday.

"That's the projected goal," Drake said to WOSU of the probe, which was expected to be complete by Sunday. "The investigation is underway as we speak. It will be finished when it is finished. The most important thing is to get good information so we can make the right decisions going forward."

Meyer has been on administrative leave while Ohio State examines whether he acted appropriately upon learning of the reported incidents involving receivers coach Zach Smith.

The Buckeyes fired Smith on July 23 after his past domestic abuse suspicions were publicized. He was investigated in 2015 and arrested for domestic violence in 2009 while on Meyer's staff at Florida, but neither case resulted in charges.

Smith appeared in court July 18, days before his firing from Ohio State, for a criminal trespassing citation. His ex-wife had filed for a protective order against him.
