Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, the surprise hero of the national championship game, suffered a thumb injury at practice on Tuesday and was taken to Birmingham for evaluation.

Head coach Nick Saban confirmed the injury but did not provide details.

"Probably going to require some time for him to get back," Saban said, according to Alex Scarborough of ESPN. "I'm not going to speculate on what the injury might be."

It is unclear if Tagovailoa, who is heading into his sophomore season, will be available for Alabama's spring game on Saturday, April 21 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
