Nebraska wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey and defensive lineman Dylan Owen were hospitalized earlier in January with rhabdomyolysis after a workout, but have since returned to the team, head coach Scott Frost confirmed to reporters Tuesday.
Lindsey was hospitalized for three days and Owen for two, according to Parker Gabriel of the Lincoln Journal Star. Frost described their hospital stays as mostly precautionary.
The first-year coach, who was hired in December, explained the injuries occurred after a weightlifting workout intended to help evaluate his players' conditioning.
The National Library of Medicine describes rhabdomyolysis as the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue that releases a protein called myoglobin into the bloodstream. Processing myoglobin can damage the kidneys. As Frost notes, one symptom of rhabdomyolsis is unusually dark or red urine.
