Rashaan Salaam's Heisman Trophy was auctioned off Saturday night for a record-breaking $399,608, raising funds for CTE-related medical research in the process.

The former Colorado star, who won the award in 1994, died almost 14 months ago at the age of 42 of an apparent suicide. He sold his trophy two years before his death.

Salaam rushed for a whopping 2,055 yards and 24 touchdowns in his Heisman-winning season and was drafted 21st overall by the Chicago Bears. The California native bounced around the league with numerous teams before ending his career in 2004.

According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, the previous record for a Heisman sold at auction was $395,240 for Bruce P. Smith's trophy from 1941. O.J. Simpson's 1968 award fetched $255,000 in 1999 and Charles White's 1977 trophy sold for $184,000 in 2000.
