Illinois hires former Arizona co-OC Rod Smith as offensive coordinator

Mike DiNovo / USA TODAY Sports

Illinois has found a new man to lead its offense, as the team announced Friday it's hired former Arizona assistant Rod Smith for the roles of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Smith spent the previous six seasons with the Wildcats in the role of co-offensive coordinator under head coach Rich Rodriguez, who was fired earlier this month. Previously, Smith was the quarterbacks coach under Rodriguez at Michigan.

The latest move fills a void on Illinois head coach Lovie Smith's staff after former offensive coordinator Garrick McGee was fired Dec. 23 following two seasons with the program.
