Michigan's quarterback problems may be a thing of the past, as Ole Miss star Shea Patterson announced Monday he's transferring to the Wolverines.

It's not yet clear whether Patterson, who's coming off his sophomore campaign with the Rebels, will be immediately eligible at Michigan. Standard rules require undergraduates to sit out a season upon transferring, but the NCAA penalties at Ole Miss could give him an avenue to seek a waiver.

Patterson, who was the No. 1 recruit among dual-threat quarterbacks two years ago, showed great promise in his 10 career appearances at Ole Miss - the first three of which came last year. He threw for 2,269 yards with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions this season before a knee injury ended his campaign after seven contests.

The Wolverines have struggled at quarterback in three years under coach Jim Harbaugh, who arrived in Ann Arbor with a reputation as something of a quarterback guru. Adding the dynamic Patterson should allow Harbaugh and the Wolverines to expand the playbook and make explosive plays more frequently in the future.

The move to the Big House will be a homecoming of sorts for Patterson, as his parents are longtime Michigan season-ticket holders.
