Mississippi State officially hires Bob Shoop as DC

Matt Bush-USA TODAY Sports

Joe Moorhead is continuing to build his staff for his first season at Mississippi State, with the school officially hiring Bob Shoop as defensive coordinator.

Shoop spent the last two seasons as DC for Tennessee before travelling across the SEC to join the Bulldogs staff. He's also spent time as the defensive coordinator at Penn State and Vanderbilt in recent years.

"Bob is a terrific defensive mind," Moorhead said in a statement. "He will put our players in position to succeed both on and off the field. We are excited to have him in Starkville."

Shoop's defense ranked inside the top 25 from 2011-15, but struggled last season at Tennessee with injuries decimating the roster. The Bulldogs have talent coming back to Starkville next year, as Mississippi State ranked 24th in the country in scoring defense last term.

The Bulldogs also announced the hire of Marcus Johnson to coach the offensive line next season. Johnson spent last year in the same role at Duke.
