Report: West Virginia's Grier to miss several weeks with broken finger

Ben Queen-USA TODAY Sports

It looks as though West Virginia will be without Will Grier for the foreseeable future, as a source told ESPN's Jake Trotter that the star quarterback will miss several weeks with a broken finger in his throwing hand.

Grier sustained the injury in graphic fashion during the Mountaineers' loss to Texas on Saturday after diving for the end zone in the first quarter. His finger bent backward awkwardly and he ran to the sidelines in pain.

Following the game, Grier flew to Charlotte, where he's expected to undergo surgery Sunday.

His absence is a massive loss for the Mountaineers. Grier is one of the nation's most prolific passers, throwing for 3,440 yards and 34 touchdowns in his first season as starter.

Chris Chugunov replaced Grier and threw for 189 yards and a touchdown against the Longhorns.

West Virginia finishes the regular season with a game against No. 3 Oklahoma next weekend.
