Road woes: Which top-10 team suffered the worst loss this weekend?

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Entering a weekend with zero matchups between ranked teams, the college football world is preparing itself for a boring slate of games.

As the page turns on Week 7, we've been reminded of an age-old adage in the glorious sport; no matter the situation, it's damn hard to win a conference game on the road.

Four top-10 teams all fell to unranked opponents on the road this weekend, a result that will surely blow up the previous rankings in the AP Poll, and could have massive implications on the College Football Playoff picture.

Here are the victims from a wild weekend.

No. 2 Clemson

Opponent: at Syracuse
Spread: Clemson -23.5
Score: Syracuse 27, Clemson 24

Not only did Clemson suffer a stunning loss at Syracuse, but it also saw star quarterback Kelly Bryant leave the contest with a concussion. While the Orange certainly aren't a doormat by any measure, they did lose at home to Middle Tennessee earlier this season. Provided Clemson can win out, it will still take home the ACC title and would all but guarantee itself a return trip to the CFP. Bryant's injury, however, is worrisome. Also, Clemson's loss meant we got the latest incredible locker-room speech from Syracuse's energetic coach Dino Babers.

No. 5 Washington

Opponent: at Arizona State
Spread: Washington -17.5
Score: Arizona State 13, Washington 7

Much to the dismay of Chris Petersen, this contest didn't kickoff until 10:45 p.m. ET, but the Washington coach is going to wish it didn't kick off at all. Somehow the Huskies only managed to score seven points against the nation's 119th-ranked defense and fell in stunning fashion to Arizona State. With a weak non-conference schedule, even if Washington runs the table and wins the Pac-12, it is far from guaranteed a spot in the CFP. There's no way around it, this was an absolutely crippling loss for the Huskies.

No. 8 Washington State

Opponent: at Cal
Spread: Washington State -16.5
Score: Cal 37, Washington State 3

What in the name of Mike Leach happened on Friday night? Losing to Cal was surprising enough for Washington State, but getting blown off the field by a 37-3 scoreline has to be among the biggest shocks in recent memory. Prolific quarterback Luke Falk threw five interceptions and Ross Bowers' kamikaze touchdown run provided the punctuation on an epic win for Justin Wilcox in his first season as head coach.

Washington State is in the same predicament as Washington after playing a fairly weak non-conference schedule. A perfect run to the season may not guarantee a spot in the CFP, so Leach and crew will have to run up the score and try to grab style points throughout the rest of the slate.

No. 10 Auburn

Opponent: at LSU
Spread: Auburn -6.5
Score: LSU 27, Auburn 23

While there's certainly no shame in losing a road game in Death Valley, when you lead 20-0 at one point, there's going to be some questions about the performance. After racing out to the three-score advantage in the first quarter, Auburn's offense was an absolute disaster and LSU used some big plays to come all the way back. With a loss to Clemson already on the schedule and games against Texas A&M, Georgia, and Alabama still to go, it could be the end of the line for Gus Malzahn with the Tigers.
