Gundy believes trademark mullet has earned Oklahoma State 'millions'

Can a haircut be worth a million dollars?

One person who believes that to be true is Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy, whose trademark mullet has become part of the 49-year-old's identity in the college football universe. The mullet was even popular enough to land Gundy a SportsCentre interview with Barry Melrose in February, and according to Mitch Sherman of ESPN, Gundy has pinpointed the value of what his haircut is worth to the university.

"I'm going to say that the dollar figure is somewhere in the millions for the amount of time that we've had on the air for that," Gundy said during Big 12 Media Days.

"We need to get our brand out there at Oklahoma State," he added. "If you look back it, you say, 'What did you get out of it?' Well, OK, all of that happened at a time when nobody was talking about Oklahoma State football. Nobody was talking about college football, but our brand was out there all across the country."

Who does Gundy credit for coming up with the idea to use the mullet as a marketing tool? He gives that distinction to fellow Oklahoma State employees.

"I get credit for it, because I'm the fool that stands up there and does it," Gundy said. "But they're the ones that think of it."

Gundy and his mullet will be seen on field for the first time in 2017 when the Cowboys take on Tulsa at home on Aug. 31.
