Former Texas A&M AD on Texas rivalry: 'We don't need them anymore'

Erich Schlegel-USA TODAY Sports

If former Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne had a say, the Aggies' rivalry with Texas would never be renewed.

Byrne was with the program from 2003-12 and witnessed the end of the rivalry when Texas A&M left the Big 12 for the SEC. When the last game took place between the two sides in 2011, though, Byrne admits he thought the rivalry would continue.

"Their AD (DeLoss Dodds) at the time came out and said we will never play Texas A&M again, and they worked along with Baylor and the conference to have no one in the (Big 12) schedule us," Byrne told John Talty of AL.com. "There were other forces at work to make sure we didn't play."

With regular games against teams like Alabama, LSU, and Auburn, the Aggies now boast an annual schedule with several marquee matchups.

"We don't need them anymore," Byrne added.

Tell us how you really feel, Bill.
