Charlie Strong may not be without work for long, as sources told Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports that Strong is at South Florida on Friday and is the front-runner to land its head coaching job.
Texas fired Strong following his third season with the program, concluding his tenure with a record of 16-21. Prior to Texas, Strong led Louisville for four seasons, posting an impressive 37-15 mark, including a Sugar Bowl win over Florida in 2012.
Taking over the Bulls program would be a natural fit for Strong - the 56-year-old was an assistant with Florida from 1991-94 and 2003-09, and knows the recruiting trail in the Sunshine State well. His ability to pluck Teddy Bridgewater from Florida to Louisville was a major reason for his success with the Cardinals.
The South Florida position became available after Willie Taggart left for the Oregon position Wednesday. The Bulls posted a strong 10-2 mark in 2016 and meet South Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 29.
