The Atlanta Braves appear more than happy to spend a large chunk of their $9.9 million in bonus-pool money on Kyle Wright - the fifth overall selection of the 2017 MLB Draft.
The Braves agreed to terms with the Vanderbilt starter, they announced Friday. Wright's over-slot bonus is reportedly worth $7 million, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports - which is a new major-league record.
The record was previously held by the Chicago Cubs, who signed third baseman and former second overall pick Kris Bryant to a $6.7-million bonus deal in 2013.
The suggested value for the fifth overall selection was $5.7 million. The 21-year-old Wright was heralded as one of the best prospects entering the draft and considered the finest pitcher among his class.
