Duke's Grayson Allen admits to 'mistake' in tripping opponent

Duke guard Grayson Allen acknowledged Sunday he "made a mistake" when he tripped Florida State's Xavier Rathan-Mayes at the end of Thursday's game.

"For me, it's just being smart," Allen said when asked about the ACC's reprimand directed towards him. "I've had to be smart all season. Obviously I made a mistake. I messed up, and I wish I wouldn't have."

Allen's comments came after the Blue Devils lost to Pitt in Duke's first action since the Seminoles game.

The trip against Florida State marked the second such incident for Allen this year. In early February, Allen kicked out his leg at Louisville's Ray Spalding and sent him sprawling. Allen said Sunday he knows he can't make the same mistake a third time, but won't change his playing style.

"For me as a person, I can't let it affect how physical I play. But I just can't make stupid plays like I did."

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski - who apologized to Florida State following the incident - also commented on the matter, saying he spoke to Allen after the play, and that a suspension wasn't warranted.

"What he got was the stiffest reprimand a player has gotten in our conference this year," Krzyzewski said. "There have been other guys who have hit people and whatever, and no reprimand. I'm not knocking our conference. I'm just saying I thought they took action. And then you have to move on. The world doesn't move on because it's Duke. So we have to live with that. I thought we handled it the way we should, and we need to move on."
