NCAA Game Summary - Rhode Island at Stanford
Stanford, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chasson Randle erupted for a game-high 35 points as the Stanford Cardinal posted a 74-65 win over the Rhode Island Rams in the second round of the NIT at Maples Pavilion.
Randle shot not only 9-of-16 from the floor for second-seeded Stanford (21-13), he also converted 15-of-19 at the free-throw line. Also scoring in double figures was Anthony Brown with 16 points, while Stefan Nastic was responsible for a game-high 11 rebounds.
With the victory, Stanford now heads to the quarterfinals on Tuesday to face the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Rhode Island (23-10), the third seed, was paced by EC Matthews with 23 points and seven rebounds, but he shot only 3-of-9 behind the 3-point line and turned the ball over seven times before fouling out. Hassan Martin pitched in with 16 points and eight boards in the setback.
Both sides had trouble finding the basket in the first half as URI converted just 31.3 percent from the floor and the Cardinal 29.0 percent, but still the host managed to move out to a 31-27 advantage at the break.
In the second half Stanford, which led from start to finish, made just nine total field goals but feasted at the free-throw line (24-of-35) in order to pull out the win.
In addition to being forced into 15 turnovers, the Rams were also outscored at the charity stripe by a whopping 36-12 margin.
