Wichita State upsets Kansas, advances to Sweet Sixteen
Wichita State is going to the Sweet Sixteen after upsetting instate rival Kansas 78-65.
It was the first meeting between the two teams since 1993, and one Wichita State and their fans had been itching for since Kansas head coach Bill Self said he had no desire to schedule games with the school back in 2013.
The Shockers took control in the second half, pushing their three-point halftime lead to 11 by the 15-minute mark. They kept the Jayhawks at bay by putting up 49 points in the second frame.
Tekele Cotton was outstanding for the Shockers, scoring 19 points on the night. Fred VanVleet stuffed the stat sheet, scoring 17 with six rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Perry Ellis and Frank Mason III tried to keep the Jayhawks in it, with Mason connecting on five 3-pointers and Ellis dropping 17 and shooting 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Wichita State will now face off against Notre Dame on Thursday with a chance to head to the Elite Eight next weekend.
