No. 1 North Carolina falls to Iowa State for 1st loss of season
No. 1-ranked North Carolina suffered its first loss of the season Friday, falling 70-65 to Iowa State at the Phil Knight Invitational in Portland.
Cyclones senior guard Caleb Grill led Iowa State with 31 points, the most points by any player over a No. 1-ranked team since 2019, according to ESPN's Jeff Borzello.
Iowa State forced 14 turnovers compared to North Carolina's 10. The Cyclones moved the ball effectively, recording 17 assists on 25 made field goals.
The Tar Heels struggled from beyond the arc. They shot 3-of-18, making 17% of attempted shots.
Junior guard RJ Davis scored 15 points for North Carolina. Senior forward Armando Bacot recorded 13 points and nine rebounds.
Iowa State moves on to the Phil Knight Invitational championship on Sunday.
