Ewing reveals Olympic medals, 1984 NCAA title ring were stolen
When you're 7 feet tall and one of the most iconic athletes in New York sports history, you face the possibility of becoming a target.
Just ask New York Knicks legend Patrick Ewing, who revealed in a recent appearance on the "Dan Patrick Show" that both of his Olympic gold medals with Team USA - from the 1984 and 1992 Summer Games - plus his 1984 NCAA championship ring were all stolen.
"I lost my medals because it was '92 and I moved so many times. I couldn't find both of my gold medals," the Hall of Famer said Tuesday. "And I was able to get them back.
"My house got broken into in New York at one point and I think they stole both my medals. I was able to call (longtime USA Basketball managing director) Jerry Colangelo and he was great to be able to get me two replacement medals."
Ewing played for Team USA as an amateur in 1984 in Los Angeles and then suited up for the vaunted 1992 Dream Team in Barcelona, Spain, as a seasoned pro.
He also won the national championship as the fulcrum of the Georgetown Hoyas' lineup in 1984, beating Hakeem Olajuwon's Houston Cougars 84-75.
"They did take my championship ring - my college championship ring," Ewing added. "But someone tried to sell it on eBay and I was able to get that one back."
