Wake Forest fires head coach Danny Manning
Wake Forest has parted ways with head coach Danny Manning after six seasons, the school announced Saturday.
"I am very thankful for having had the opportunity to lead the Wake Forest men's basketball program. ... I wish the program nothing but success going forward," Manning said in a statement.
Associate head coach Randolph Childress will serve as head coach on an interim basis.
Under Manning, the Demon Deacons finished with a 13-18 record in 2019-20, their third consecutive sub-.500 season with him at the helm. His only winning campaign with the program came in 2016-17 when Wake Forest reached the NCAA Tournament after finishing the regular season 19-14.
The former first overall draft pick in 1988 finishes his coaching career at the school with a combined record of 78-111, including a 30-80 mark in ACC play. He's set to receive more than $15 million as part of his buyout agreement, CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein reports.
Among the candidates to replace Manning are Steve Forbes, Pat Kelsey, Wes Miller, and Ryan Odom, Stadium's Jeff Goodman reports.
