Following his retirement from a 19-year NBA career, Howard has been an assistant coach with the Miami Heat since 2013. His playing days are also rooted in Michigan, where he was a member of the school's famed "Fab Five" in the early 1990s.

The Wolverines job opened after John Beilein left the school to become head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
